A few weeks ago, I was at an artisan show when I was approached by a customer (I'm calling him AWESOME CUSOMER from now on) with 'a special request', so of course I was interested. He described a kitchen tool he'd had for years (decades!) that split his English muffins with ease. The problem was that it was in rough shape and need of replacement! He tried to explain what he was looking for, but I had never seen an English Muffin Splitter before, so I wasn't totally sure what he was looking for.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and I get an email from AWESOME CUSTOMER with a detailed request...and pictures of what remains of his current splitter.
As you can see, it's just a remnant of the original! I did some Google sleuthing and found a picture of the original - a vintage 'muffin splitter' from the 1970s. Using the pictures that AWESOME CUSTOMER provided, the image I found on Google, and my SolidWorks design skills I created a prototype 3D printed English Muffin Splitter! This version is designed with stronger tines, to hopefully prevent the breakage experienced by AWESOME CUSTOMER. Below you can see the Google image, a partial view of the CAD version, and the 'sliced' model ready for my 3D printer!
I sent the sliced file to my trusty Prusa printer, and about an hour later I had my very own 3D printed English Muffin Splitter! **The image below is English Muffin Splitter #2 - in my excitement to test out my new creation I didn't get a picture before I grabbed it off the printer!
So, of course, I had to get an English muffin out of the freezer and test it out!
The slicer is pretty much the PERFECT size for an English muffin. I didn't actually measure an English muffin before I guesstimated the sizing and make this in CAD....so I'm very happy with how it turned out!
The real test was to split the English muffin. This muffin was still a little frozen when I split it (does that make it easier or harder to split??), but it separated really easily! I was actually surprised how easily it stabbed into the muffin.
I pushed the splitter in until the tines hit the plate. Then I pried it open and gently trimmed the sides where it was still stuck.
Ta-da! It split open beautifully, with almost no crumbs, and without falling apart!
I didn't know I needed a 3D printed English Muffin Splitter, but it turns out this is what my English muffin routine was missing!
Finally, shout out to my Granny for the awesome plates! They are also legit 1970s vintage, so seemed appropriate for testing my 2020s recreation of a 1970s kitchen gadget!
